How to use a silicone mold

If the mold is hard and difficult to remove

Most molds are fine for aroma stones, but with candles, some may break or chip when trying to remove them from the mold.

In that case, use scissors to make a vertical cut in the mold in an inconspicuous place on the piece.
You could imagine splitting it in half lengthwise, but it will be easier to align the joints properly and maintain the appearance of your piece if there is even a small part of the mold connected, so we recommend that you try cutting it first before splitting it in half.

Even if the cut is not clean, jagged edges will make it easier to fit the molds together. If you are worried about the effect on your piece, make straight cuts with scissors.

In addition, when using molds with cuts , please seal the seams with strong packing tape or rubber bands to prevent material from leaking out.

What can you use strong packing tape for?

・For bonding molds together
Ace Cloth is a super strong packing tape. Regular packing tape will peel off from the mold even if you stick it on, but Ace Cloth will stick the molds together and prevent material leaks.

Separate type molds or molds that are split in half will inevitably leak material.
It is possible to secure it with a rubber band, but if you try to secure it too tightly, it often ends up distorting and resulting in a disappointing piece of work.
If you align the seams of a separate type, a mold that has been split in half, or a mold with cuts firmly and then apply Ace Cloth, there will be almost no leakage of material.

If it is difficult to make the mold fit tightly, first stick Ace Cloth all around the joints to fill in the gaps, and then use a rubber band to reinforce it so that it does not distort, and you will get a good result.

- To clean the mold : Silicone molds are a product that easily attracts dirt.
For this reason, at RULI/MOCO, we use Ace Cloth to remove any debris from almost all products when packing them before shipping, and we carefully inspect them before shipping them out.
It is also useful for cleaning up after creating your work, so please give it a try.

Please see the explanation below regarding polycarbonate material leakage.

How do I thread the candle wick?

There are two ways to thread the candle wick.

A. First, insert the core and then secure it in place with chopsticks (suitable for molds with thicker bottoms).
B. Before the candle hardens, make a hole with a toothpick or bamboo skewer, then insert the wick after the candle has hardened and been removed from the mold (suitable for molds with thin bottoms or polycarbonate without wick holes).

Regarding method A : This is the most common way to thread the core. It is suitable for molds with thicker bottoms (approximately 3mm or thicker). The advantage is that you don't have to bother with securing a hole for the core.
Push the core through the mold using a bamboo skewer or something similar, until the core pierces through.
Place a chopstick in the mold, place the core between it and hold it in place until it hardens.
We also sell centering tools that can hold the lead in place by floating it. Please feel free to use them.

Regarding method B : This method is suitable for thin molds such as thin molds and polycarbonate that does not have a hole for the candle wick. When using method A, especially for thin molds, there is a risk of the mold being damaged due to tearing when inserting the wick.

In this method, you should stand the blunt end of the skewers or bamboo skewers on the mold so that they do not damage the mold. Therefore, you should wait until the skewers or toothpicks have hardened enough to stand on their own, or you can hold them in place with disposable chopsticks as in A.
Remove it before it hardens completely. It is very difficult to remove it after it has hardened completely. If you accidentally let it harden completely, use pliers to pinch it and turn it. (Please be careful not to apply force in the wrong direction as it may break inside.)
If you try to widen the hole later, the candle may break, so be careful to make sure you screw it all the way in.

Material leaks from polycarbonate joints and core holes

Polycarbonate is a product that is particularly prone to leaks, especially the separate types. First, secure it with rubber bands or screws, and be sure to secure the joints with clay.
Also, material will leak out through the hole where the candle wick is placed, so be sure to secure this with clay as well.
Don't forget to use silicone spray before pouring the candle.

The thickness of the mold is not uniform, which affects the finish. What should I do?

Even though the molds are made overseas, some are roughly made.
If your work is affected, please use cardboard or something similar to adjust the thickness.
Please note that we do not offer returns or exchanges if the thickness is uneven.

After using it many times, it seems like the mold release has become less effective.

Molds are consumables. Just like resins that cause chemical reactions, aroma stones, and candles that hold hot items, they deteriorate little by little each time they are used. If you can't remove them from the mold or they start to affect the finish of your work, it's time to replace them.

How do I care for my silicone mold?

We recommend using Ace Cloth to remove any dirt that may be stuck to your silicone mold.

It tends to be difficult to remove silicon mold debris with regular packing tape, which means you end up using a lot of tape, which is uneconomical.
Strong duct tape is a little expensive, but it's best to consider it a necessary expense.
Direct sunlight and high and low temperatures will cause the mold to deteriorate, so please store it in a cool, dark place.

If any material gets into the seams, remove it with strong packing tape.

Please be careful not to pour candles down the drain as they may clog your drain.

The color of the silicone mold is different from the photo.

The silicone molds sold in our shop are basically random colors. The basic colors are white, pink, gray, etc., and in rare cases, they may be other colors such as green or blue. There are no defects that will affect the creation of your work, so please understand.
